How to prepare for job interviews

2 min | David Brown | Article | Job searching | Interview advice

A man writes on a notebook. He wears a blue shirt and glasses and is sitting with a monitor in on the right hand side.

The interview is the time to demonstrate your relevant skills, experience and personality fit for the job. Be in control with careful preparation and research about the interviewer, company and current trends in the industry.

  1. The interviewer: Check their online profile; you may have a shared history or connection and you’ll then recognize them from their photo.
  2. The company: Have they been mentioned in recent news articles? Have they won an industry award? Has there been a merger or acquisition? Make sure to drop your knowledge of this information into the conversation. Understanding the company culture can also give you insights into what they value in their team members.
  3. The project or industry: Have there been any hiccups or issues? Are there any recent changes in the industry or area that could affect the project? This shows your awareness and proactive approach to the job description.

Pro tip: Check directions

When possible, visit the location before the interview to check for traffic issues or construction. For interviews on a site, allow plenty of time to get through security and registration. Find out in advance if there is parking for you. At the very least look at Google Street View to see the site layout.

This preparation will help you feel more comfortable and confident in the work environment.
