Transitioning from military to civilian life can be a daunting journey. As someone who has recently walked that path, I understand the unique challenges veterans face when seeking employment. After working in the same system for over 30 years, I was a bit lost. The important thing to remember is that you aren’t alone.

My passion for supporting fellow veterans led me to join Hays, not only in a cyber capacity but also as an advocate for those who’ve served. If you are in this boat, I’d love to talk. However, even if we don’t connect, I can provide some up front help.

Here are five job-hunting success tips tailored for veterans seeking jobs:

Prepare for the transition

Moving from the structured military environment to the civilian workforce can be challenging. In the civilian world, you must take initiative, unlike in the military where career paths are clearly defined. Set short-term and long-term goals, just as you did in the military, and hold yourself accountable to them.  I know that there may be organizational pressure to work until the bitter end, but from personal experience I can say that you need and deserve the time to work on your transition.  As the song goes, “The Army Goes Rolling Along.” That means they will still have an Army after you leave… so leave in a way that helps you once you are out.

One major preparatory task is organizing your educational and training documents, including your Report of Separation and Verification of Military Experience and Training, which will help build your resume.

1. Build your network

Networking is crucial. What might have been considered taboo in the military is essential in the civilian world. Seek out other veterans, connect with them, and learn from their experiences. Connecting with people who used to do your military job and have transitioned successfully into civilian workforce will increase your talent visibility.  Just as you needed support within your unit or division in the military, you’ll need people to guide you through your job search, recommend you, and serve as references.

2. Start early

Begin your job search well in advance. Waiting until the last minute can add unnecessary stress. Start exploring job opportunities about 90-180 days before your terminal leave. That way you can give your career a 180 degree by giving yourself enough runway to land at a job of your choice.

3. Craft a quality civilian resume

Your resume is your first introduction to potential employers. Highlight your skills, experiences, and achievements in a way that resonates with civilian employers. Translate your military experience into terms that non-military professionals can understand. Tailor your resume to match the job descriptions of the roles you are applying for and include a cover letter that seeks to partner your and the organization’s goals.

4. Practice interview skills

Prepare for interviews by practicing common questions, researching the company, and understanding the role you’re applying for. Use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method to answer behavioural questions.  Reaching out to a friend who already transitioned or several of the 501(c)(3) organizations focused on helping can make this easier.

5. Embrace the Journey

Persist and take the right approach, and you’ll succeed in your journey to civilian employment. At Hays, we facilitate a successful transition for veterans entering the civilian workforce. We tailor our services to connect organizations with highly skilled veterans, offering a range of positions that benefit from the unique experience and discipline these individuals possess.
