HAYS Recruitment is currently partnered with a fast-paced, customer-focused climate-tech startup that controls and runs the key energy systems in 8,000+ buildings throughout the US. Their unique hardware and software service significantly reduces energy usage, substantially lowering costs and carbon output. Their technology takes the equivalent of 100,000 cars worth of carbon emissions off the road each year. They are seeking a Building Systems Engineer with deep expertise in commercial cooling systems to help define how buildings should ideally operate for maximum efficiency. This role will play a critical part in the launch of our new cooling controls product, providing thought leadership, system design expertise, and real-world insight into how chilled water systems, cooling towers, and associated plant equipment can be optimized across diverse building types.

Your new role

• Define and document best-practice operating strategies for chilled water systems, cooling towers, pumps, and air handling equipment
• Partner with Product, Controls Engineering, and Field teams to ensure our software and controls logic reflects real-world, high-efficiency performance standards
• Analyze building schematics, sequence of operations, point list, and historical performance data to identify optimization opportunities
• Provide technical guidance during the design and commissioning of cooling systems integrated with the company's platform
• Serve as an internal expert on energy-efficient cooling practices across a range of commercial and multifamily buildings
• Conduct field walkthroughs and system audits to ground truth assumptions and build a library of operational insights
• Help train internal teams and external partners on efficient cooling system design and operation

What you'll need to succeed

• 5+ years of experience designing, operating, and/or optimizing commercial HVAC cooling systems
  • Deep understanding of central plant operations, including chillers, cooling towers, pumps, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and BAS/BMS integrations
• Familiarity with NYC building types and infrastructure, especially multifamily or mixed-use properties
• Ability to translate complex mechanical strategies into actionable steps for product and engineering teams
• Collaborative mindset and willingness to work cross-functionally with field technicians, software developers, and building operators
• Experience with energy modeling, retro-commissioning, or performance contracting is a plus
